Stacks of unrefrigerated beer wrapped in black plastic and labeled.
Alcohol sales are prohibited on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday of Holy Week in Costa Rica (you should see the sales on Wednesday!). To be sure that no one breaks the law, police tape refrigerators closed that contain beer and wrap plastic over unrefrigerated alcohol stock in stores. These photos were taken today at a grocery store in Atenas.

Refrigerator taped shut and posted with a warning.

At 8:00 PM today, Costa Rica’s ban on alcohol sales will go into effect. Liquor sections in grocery stores will be covered in black plastic and taped to prevent access to cans of Imperial, Pilsen and Bavaria. Bars will shut down, many with yellow tape over their doorways announcing the fact. Anyone prosecuted and convicted for selling liquor during this time is subject to a jail sentence. (FYI: Liquor bans are also in effect during presidential elections.)
